Notice of Uncontested Election April 21

It is with deep sadness and regret that I announce, on behalf of Shildon Town Council, the passing of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh aged 99 years.

The Town Council would like to send their condolences to the Queen and the Royal Family on this deeply sad occasion.

If the community wish to lay flowers, these can be laid on the grassed area adjacent to the Town Council Offices.

To commemorate V E Day a special virtual singalong has been arranged to take place on Saturday, 8th May featuring our very own special sweetheart ‘Wor Vera’.

This event has been organised by Shildon Town Council with funding secured from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Shildon Town Council, Cllr Shirley Quinn, Neighbourhood Budget (Bishop Auckland Shildon AAP) and Livin.

Shildon Town Council are proud to be working in partnership with @GreenfieldArts on the #ShoutAboutShildon – Community Spirit project. After successfully securing funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund to deliver VE Day 75 Commemorative Project, to include a community arts project and a celebrative family music event.

A year later than planned, due to the impact of Covid-19, we can commence the VE Day Community Art Project. The project will engage with members of the community to share their thoughts and memories with us about the themes of community spirit, influential individuals, and significant moments for Shildon. These beautiful boxes of inspiration are to invoke memories of Shildon past, the people that helped make Shildon what it is and those individuals that have encourage and inspired us, through their actions or deeds, to get through difficult times, that ‘War time Spirit’.

The boxes include ‘Shout About Shildon book’, gift and postcards for residents to capture, send back and share their memories, which is the first part of the Artistic Project.

Next stage, resident artist Paul Theo Murray, will put his artistic talents to use to create an artistic reminder that is inspired by all of this work, the importance of the time and those who shaped it, which we will share with you later on in the project.

Shildon Town Council is not the designated Education Authority and, therefore, has no powers over delivery of education services but has a role to present the views of the community. However, Shildon Town Council want to see a new, high quality secondary school built in Shildon that is of sufficient size to educate the young people of our town and the surrounding area. The school will be modern, it will be well led to inspire children to achieve and realise their full potential. A significant number of children in our town come from homes where there is high deprivation and a lack of aspiration; we want to nurture these children and help them to aspire and learn so that they can become fulfilled and enriched. We want them to feel a sense of pride in their town, and we believe that by giving them a brand new facility that can be utilised alongside existing facilities such as the Athletics Track and the Leisure Centre will enhance their prospects in life and will encourage healthier and happier lifestyles.
