Autumn Free Fun and Food Project

Shildon Town Council and Shildon Alive – In Your Neighbourhood Funding – Guerrilla Gardening Project 2021
Shildon Town Council and Shildon Alive work together each year to provide a range of horticultural and environmental opportunities to Children attending Shildon’s Primary Schools, both onsite and in the wider community using Hackworth Park, St John’s Church Yard and Furnace Pitt Community Garden.
Unfortunately, last year due to ongoing impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, we were unable to deliver our planned activities with school pupils, one of which was to be the sowing of the brand new Legacy VE Day 75 Wildflower Meadow.
We were however fortunate that we also have DAAC – Durham Agency Against Crime, using Hackworth Park, as an outdoor learning environment. Once it became apparent we were unable to proceed as planned with the schools, DAAC stepped up, and offered to help us out by getting their young people involved in sowing the new 70metre by 30meter meadow area.
They made a great job, and ensured we were able to meet the criteria of the Civic Pride ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ Grant Scheme, in conjunction with Northumbria in Bloom and the RHS which provided us with an opportunity to again entre the ‘In Your Neighbourhood Awards 2021. Representatives of the group attended the presentations on 29th September, where the new Legacy VE Day 75 Wildflower Meadow, helped us again attain ‘Thriving’, status again, for this project work, a fantastic result for everyone involved.

Shildon Town Council would also like to thank Cllr. Dave Reynolds for his wonderful idea to hold the Shildon Blooming Best Garden Competition, at a time when we all needed something, other than Covid-19 to focus on.
He has personally sponsored the final award of the competition, the Overall Blooming Best Shildon Garden winner, and this year the bragging rights will go to Mr Ken Holdsworth for sharing with us his beautiful, wildlife friendly front garden, which has several areas, all beautifully maintained, interesting plants and shrubs, a good use of hard landscaping, all coming together to create a calm and contemplative space where you could imagine, sitting down with a cuppa, watching the bees and insects buzzing around, whilst surround by the beautiful planting. A credit to your horticultural skills.
Well done, and keep on growing and gardening.

Update- VE Day 75 Legacy Wildflower Meadow Hackworth Park
For those of you who regularly visit Hackworth Park, you will have seen the early groundwork preparations by Shildon Town Council’s Direct Works Team, made in readiness for the creation of a new park asset.
The ‘Legacy VE DAY 75 Wildflower Meadow’ which was made possible by securing funding from the ‘In Your Neighbourhood’ pot, as part of the wider Shildon Town Council VE Day 75 Project Package.
We were all ready for an exciting year, then sadly Covid hit, and we were forced to put the project on hold, until finally earlier this year, the improved weather provided a window of opportunity for the seed to be sown.
We worked with staff and young people from Durham Agency Against Crime (DAAC), who were only too pleased to help, and over the course of a couple of days, they had hand sown 70 metres x 30 metres of area, a very big job.
Everything was now in the hands of Mother Nature, the weather, which I might say was not very helpful at first, with very cold temperatures and lots of frost followed by wind and rain, and even more rain, conditions improved and gave us hope, the green shoots started to appear and then the whole area was flushed in fresh green growth.
It has now been several months since the sowing took place, and wow how it has come along lovely.
It is a beautiful thing to behold, a big, bold, splash of yellows, blues, and reds, these are the annuals we are seeing, and over the next two years the perennials will come on board, so it will get better as time goes on.
If you have not seen it, it is worth a visit.
